Fullgospel, my brother, w ap konfonn "etimoloji" avèk edikasyon. English, French, Spanish and also Haitian Creole are all roman languages for the most part. That means they share a lot of words between them. Those common words are results of either direct vocabulary associations or cultural encounters throughout history.

The French language has a lot of English or English-based words in it, they call them ENGLISHISMS. Among them all you will find CREOLISMS, GALLICISMS (for French) and SPANISHISMS. There's nothing wrong with anything here.

Words don't make a nation. Nations make words. In Haiti the same word means different things than in France. For example, the word: fréquent (frekan). The same way, For the Haitian culture, DYAZ means something different than JAZZ. That doesn't mean Haitians are not educated just because the source of that word comes from another culture and means something else.

Remember, WEST INDIES today means countries like Haiti etc... There's no INDIA of the West. It's a result of Christopher Columbus' geographical IGNORANCE who thought he was in the west side India. Even though history knows that's wrong, the name remains. There's always a story behind each word for each language. That doesn't make the people who use them less or more educated because of their roots.

That's why there's a whole science called LINGUISTICS to study these things.

So for Haitians, a Dyaz is a secular band (mini-band) playing mostly konpa. that's what it is and it's not because Haitians are not educated. It's because we are part of the linguistic exchange history of the world.

I'm personally against the calling of Christian Bands "dyaz" because historically, dyaz is a band playing secular music. When I "label" a Gospel band "dyaz" pejoratively, it's only to drive the point that they are playing more like a secular band than actually preaching the word.

I understand what you mean Tibob. The word dyaz is label as a secular band. But where do you think they get the word dyaz from. Where is its origin? Don't you think they get it the same way as "douce come nous?" which became doukounou for Haitians. I believe that the problem was from the start. They misenterpreted it so they kept it. The same way today some people are misinterpreting the word konpa as konpa= secular music.

What you describe is true but IT IS NOT A PROBLEM. That's the way ALL languages develop. Through interactions with other languages, words get transfered and transformed. IT IS NOT A PROBLEM. The source of a word only EXPLAINS where the word comes from (etymology). It doesn't make the people who use it more or less educated. IT IS NOT A PROBLEM. That's how ALL languages come into being and development.

For example, the word PORK did NOT exist in English. It was PIG. But because PIG was used by peasants who raise the animals, the English bourgeoisie wanted to distinguish themselves from the peasantry (social racism). So they replace it by the French word PORC (transformed to PORK) because they know you would need to go to school to know that French word. For the same reasons COW becomes BEEF from BEUF in French etc...

Listen brother, I know a thing or two about linguistics. It's good to know the sources (etymology) of the words you speak. That's GREAT! But you need to STOP seeing what's normal in all languages as a problem for Haiti.

I don't call it normal for other languages. Other nations make mistake too, not just Haitians. For example, some americans think all haitians practice voodoo. That's a lack of education because a well educated American would know it's not true. Some people once they hear or see something negative about one person they put the tag on the others. For instance. They do the same for this band here. They haven't hear any of their music yet but because it's a konpa gospel band they already put in their minds who they are. Some people don't think twice once they hear something and it usually leads them to a wrong judgement.

this is true to a certain extant but most often konpas is viewed in a traditional way. this is why much change to konpas is not accepted by the public or the players. konpas has a nit-ch or in a box when it comes to writing konpas at least commercial konpas. it seems writers are forced to write in a traditional format and if they dont write in that manor they are relabeled. example "new generation" , konpas love

in all guys gospel konpas has to stand out on its own. it cant remind us of any haitian pop band. the idea is to promote the word and if we are reminded of djakoute, zin zenglen or who ever besides Jesus then it worthless. if the people are listing to your music and all they can feel is the groove there is a problem. i believe that if musicians take time to find the anointing the music will become complementary and not supplementary. God's word is so powerful it doesn't need much. "Bible says lift me and i will draw the people". so find ways to create songs around God's word and not the other way around. and its not only haitian doing this and its wrong in any nationality. God deserves his own style he gave us the talent use it. i say this to encourage current bands artist and future ones to give God your best not recycled material.

&abriel, your last post should be posted in all the full bands living rooms, rehearsal rooms and studio rooms so they never lose sight of what they NEED TO do for the true spiritual Christian to give them the "spiritual" credit they are claiming.
